Frequently Asked Questions

What does a backflow preventer do in a fire sprinkler system?

A backflow preventer protects potable water from contamination by preventing reverse water flow. In a fire sprinkler system, a fire backflow preventer ensures water flows in one direction while meeting local plumbing and fire code requirements.

What is the difference between an RPZ and a double check backflow preventer?

A reduced-pressure zone (RPZ) backflow preventer provides a higher level of protection by releasing water if pressure imbalance occurs, while a double check backflow preventer relies on two internal check valves for protection in lower hazard applications.

What is a double check detector assembly used for?

A double check detector assembly (DCDA) is commonly used in fire protection systems to prevent backflow while monitoring unauthorized water use. These assemblies include a detector check valve for added system supervision.

Are OS&Y valves required with fire backflow preventers?

An OS&Y valve (Outside Screw and Yoke) is often installed with a fire backflow preventer to allow visible shutoff control. These valves help meet inspection and code compliance requirements in commercial fire systems.

Can backflow preventers be used in residential and commercial systems?

Yes, residential backflow preventers, home backflow preventers, and industrial backflow prevention devices are available for various applications. From fire sprinkler backflow preventers to water softener and ice maker backflow preventers, selecting the right backflow valve ensures system safety and compliance.
