Description
Technical Specifications
The Viking Deringer 20 Double Check Backflow Prevention Valve Assembly is constructed with a main body of ductile iron conforming to ASTM A536 standards, providing outstanding mechanical strength and resistance to corrosion. Internal components, including springs and fasteners, are fabricated from 300-series stainless steel, ensuring longevity and consistent operation within aggressive fire protection environments. The valve features precision-engineered check modules made of high-strength thermoplastics, engineered for minimal wear and smooth sealing action. The sealing surfaces utilize EPDM elastomer discs, which are reversible and replaceable to sustain a positive seal and prevent backflow with minimal maintenance requirements.
Regulatory Compliance
This assembly is UL Listed to UL 1469 for fire service water control valves, establishing compliance with recognized safety and performance criteria. It also holds FM Approval, affirming suitability for use in fire protection systems according to Factory Mutual’s rigorous testing protocols. The Viking Deringer 20 meets ASSE 1015 standards for double check valve backflow preventers and fully aligns with American Water Works Association’s AWWA C510 specification. Its compliance supports adherence to NFPA 13 (Installation of Sprinkler Systems) and NFPA 24 (Installation of Private Fire Service Mains and Their Appurtenances), which mandate reliable backflow prevention in fire sprinkler system design and maintenance.
Operational Compatibility
Engineered for fire protection systems operating within a working pressure rating of up to 175 PSI (12.1 bar), this valve assembly supports robust demand scenarios without compromising performance. It accommodates common commercial fire sprinkler piping connections, with availability in flanged configurations meeting ANSI B16.1 standards. Its compact form factor and configuration offer flexibility for both horizontal and vertical installation orientations, optimizing use in mechanical rooms and confined spaces. The valve’s operational temperature range extends from 33°F to 140°F (0.5°C to 60°C), ensuring functionality across typical environmental conditions encountered in fire protection service.
Use Cases and Application Insights
The Viking Deringer 20 is tailored for commercial and industrial fire sprinkler systems requiring low-maintenance, reliable backflow prevention to safeguard potable water supplies from contamination. Its double check valve mechanism mitigates risk in non-health hazard environments where low to moderate hazard pollutants must be blocked. Fire protection engineers and system installers benefit from its straightforward integration with existing piping infrastructure, reducing retrofit complexity. The assembly’s design minimizes pressure loss, preserving system flow efficiency critical during fire events. Installation in both underground vaults and mechanical rooms is supported by corrosion-resistant materials and epoxy coatings, extending service life and reducing total cost of ownership.
Unique Advantages Over Alternatives
Unlike generic assemblies, the Viking Deringer 20’s blend of ductile iron construction with stainless steel internal parts and thermoplastic check modules strikes a balance between structural robustness and component replacement ease. The reversible EPDM seats reduce downtime and maintenance expenses by enabling simple in-field servicing. Its certifications from UL and FM provide assurance of compliance that supports regulatory inspections and insurance requirements. The valve assembly’s compatibility with NFPA mandates ensures it fits seamlessly within fire protection system lifecycle management, including inspection, testing, and preventive maintenance programs. This precision-engineered design reduces the risk of backflow-related system failures in mission-critical fire safety applications.
