Description

Technical Specifications
The 3" Reduced Pressure Assembly (RPA) with a "Z" Grooved Butterfly Valve is constructed to deliver reliable backflow prevention in fire protection and domestic water systems. The main body consists of heavy-duty, epoxy-coated ductile iron compliant with ASTM A536, providing robust resistance to corrosion and mechanical stress. Internal components such as springs and fasteners are crafted from 300-series stainless steel, ensuring durability and corrosion resistance under demanding conditions. The butterfly valve component is engineered with precision-machined stainless steel disc and seat, optimized for flow regulation and shutoff efficiency within the assembly. The reduced pressure zone incorporates dual independently-acting check valves with resilient EPDM seats to maintain positive shutoff and prevent backflow contamination.

Regulatory Compliance
This assembly meets stringent industry standards essential for fire protection systems:

  • UL Listed under UL 312, verified for reduced pressure principle backflow preventers.
  • FM Approved, ensuring performance reliability in life-safety fire systems.
  • Conforms to ASSE 1013 standards for reduced pressure principle backflow preventers.
  • Complies with NFPA 13 and NFPA 25, supporting installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements in fire sprinkler and suppression systems.

Operational Compatibility
The assembly operates reliably within an effective pressure range up to 175 PSI (12.1 bar), suited for most residential and light commercial fire protection applications. It supports temperature ranges from 33°F to 140°F (0.5°C to 60°C), accommodating typical domestic water conditions. Connection options feature "Z" grooved ends designed to meet AWWA C606, facilitating simplified installation and coupling with compatible grooved pipe systems without the need for welding or threading. The butterfly valve also operates as a positive shutoff device, enhancing system isolation capability during maintenance or emergency shutdown.

Product Application and Use Cases
This 3" Reduced Pressure Assembly "Z" Grooved Butterfly Valve is specifically tailored for residential fire protection mains and domestic water supply lines where space, ease of installation, and reliable backflow prevention are critical. The grooved butterfly valve design reduces installation time and lowers labor costs compared to traditional flanged or threaded valves. It addresses common fire protection concerns by minimizing pressure losses while maintaining effective backflow prevention, critical for compliance with local plumbing and fire codes aimed at preventing contamination of potable water.

Ideal for fire sprinkler risers, underground fire service lines, and water feed mains, this assembly provides peace of mind against backflow risks from firefighting chemicals and other pollutants. It is engineered to withstand subterranean installation challenges, mechanical room environments, and fluctuating water pressures common in residential fire systems.

Installation and Maintenance Insights
The grooved end design facilitates quick integration into existing piping systems with standard couplings, significantly reducing installation complexity and downtime. The butterfly valve component allows easy system isolation for testing, inspection, or repair without disrupting the entire water supply. The assembly includes test cocks positioned to support differential pressure testing and annual certification per NFPA 25 standards, assisting maintenance teams in monitoring valve performance and ensuring code compliance.

Choosing this 3" Reduced Pressure Assembly with "Z" Grooved Butterfly Valve ensures your fire protection system benefits from a proven, code-compliant backflow prevention solution that balances durability, operational efficiency, and installation convenience tailored for residential applications.
