Description

Technical Specifications (Material Focus)
The Deringer 40 Reduced Pressure Zone Assembly (RPZA) features a rugged main body constructed from fusion-bonded epoxy-coated ductile iron conforming to ASTM A536 standards. This design ensures high mechanical strength and corrosion resistance suitable for both subterranean and exposed installations. Internally, the assembly utilizes 300-series stainless steel springs and fasteners to prevent corrosion and maintain consistent valve performance. The check valve modules incorporate glass-filled Noryl™ or an equivalent thermoplastic known for durability and chemical resistance. EPDM elastomer discs serve as the seats, offering reversible and field-replaceable sealing surfaces to secure a tight shut-off that prevents backflow contamination.

Regulatory Compliance
This RPZA meets rigorous industry standards required for fire protection and potable water safety:

  • UL Listed: Certified to UL 1613 for Reduced Pressure Principle Backflow Preventers
  • FM Approved: Factory Mutual tested and approved specifically for fire protection applications
  • ASSE 1013: Conforms to American Society of Sanitary Engineering standards governing reduced pressure backflow prevention devices
  • AWWA C511: Compliant with American Water Works Association standards ensuring reliability in water supply systems
Additionally, it supports compliance with NFPA 13 for sprinkler system installations and NFPA 25 for inspection, testing, and maintenance protocols, incorporating pre-drilled test cocks for straightforward annual verification and differential pressure assessment.

Operational Compatibility
Designed to withstand working pressures up to 175 PSI (12.1 bar), the Deringer 40 RPZA operates reliably within a temperature range of 33°F to 140°F (0.5°C to 60°C). Connection options include flanged ANSI B16.1 and grooved AWWA C606 ends, allowing integration with widely used piping systems in fire suppression and municipal water infrastructure. The assembly supports installation in both horizontal and vertical flow orientations, optimizing flexibility across diverse piping layouts.

The Deringer 40 Reduced Pressure Zone Assembly is engineered to prevent hazardous backflow in non-health hazard environments such as fire protection systems. It is suitable for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities requiring dependable contamination control and compliance with stringent safety codes. Its robust construction mitigates maintenance frequency and downtime, addressing common concerns in high-demand fire protection settings where water purity and system integrity are critical.

Compared to simpler check valve assemblies, the Deringer 40 includes a differential relief valve that actively discharges any backpressure or back-siphonage, effectively preventing pollutant entry into the potable water supply. This feature is essential for fire line applications where pressure fluctuations are frequent and can compromise less sophisticated devices. Its durable materials and tested design reduce the risk of corrosion-related failures, a common issue in wet or underground installations.

Practical insights for system designers and maintenance personnel: the reversible EPDM seats facilitate cost-effective field servicing without full assembly replacement, and the integration of standard test ports simplifies compliance testing per local fire codes. When installed according to manufacturer guidelines, the Deringer 40 RPZA contributes directly to sustained NFPA compliance and potable water safety in fire sprinkler networks.
