Description
Technical Specifications (Material Focus)
The Colt Series Reduced Pressure Zone Assembly (RPZA) Backflow Preventer is constructed for durability and longevity in fire protection and potable water systems. The main body consists of high-grade ductile iron finished with a fusion-bonded epoxy coating to resist corrosion and mechanical wear in demanding environments. Internal components include stainless steel springs and fasteners manufactured from 300-series stainless steel, providing corrosion resistance and strength under operational pressure and temperature variations. The check valves employ glass-filled thermoplastic, engineered to provide consistent sealing and durability, while the seats feature replaceable EPDM elastomer discs to maintain a secure seal against reverse flow and prevent backflow contamination.
Regulatory Compliance
This backflow preventer is UL Listed in accordance with UL 151, certifying its ability to reliably prevent hazardous backflow in potable water supplies. It carries FM Approval, verifying compliance with rigorous testing standards for fire protection systems. The unit conforms to ASSE 1013 standards for reduced pressure zone assemblies, ensuring performance criteria are met for backflow prevention devices. Additionally, the assembly is designed to meet the installation and maintenance criteria set forth in NFPA 13 for sprinkler systems and NFPA 25 for inspection, testing, and maintenance of water-based fire protection systems.
Operational Compatibility
The Colt RPZA is rated for a maximum working pressure of 175 PSI (12.1 bar), accommodating typical pressure ranges found in commercial and industrial fire protection supply lines. It supports installation with flanged connections manufactured to ANSI B16.1 standards, enabling robust integration with existing pipework in mechanical room or underground applications. Designed for both horizontal and vertical installation orientations, the assembly ensures bidirectional flexibility depending on system layout. Operating temperature ranges from 33°F to 140°F (0.5°C to 60°C) make it suitable for indoor environments and subterranean vaults common to fire protection infrastructure.
The Colt Series RPZA is ideal for fire protection professionals, facility managers, and plumbing engineers requiring a reliable solution to prevent backflow contamination in sprinkler and fire service water lines. It addresses common challenges such as system pressure variability, corrosion exposure, and code compliance verification by incorporating hardened materials and user-friendly maintenance features like replaceable seats and pre-drilled test cocks. Compared to simpler double check valve assemblies, the reduced pressure zone design of this assembly offers enhanced protection against low-pressure backflow events, making it the preferred choice where contamination risk is elevated.
Use cases include commercial buildings, industrial complexes, and institutional facilities where potable water contamination poses significant hazards, and adherence to NFPA standards is mandatory. Its compatibility with various fire system types — wet pipe, dry pipe, pre-action, and deluge — provides versatility unmatched by many conventional backflow preventers. When specifying backflow prevention for fire protection system design or upgrading existing installations, the Colt RPZA offers a balanced solution of durability, regulatory conformity, and operational versatility that supports long-term system reliability and safety assurance.
